A BURGUNDY TRIO

Domaine Faiveley Gevrey Chambertin Cazetiers 1er Cru 2013

WA 91: Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers is darker in color than its peers and the aromatics are more broody: blackberry and dark plum, a little sullen in the context of the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, tightly coiled and like the aromatics, it feels a little contained and takes time to unfurl, though it does with several minutes in the glass. I would wait another 3-4 years or at least give this a couple of hours decanting — this is certainly one of the better Cazetiers in this vintage. Tasted September 2016.

Domaine Faiveley Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru 2013

WA 92: Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru from Faiveley has a pleasantly austere and reserved bouquet, fine mineralité underneath, aromatics that simply need time in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp acidity and an appealing edginess. Impressive tension here as black fruit merges with red towards the structured finish that expresses the terroir with style, although it tends to clam up in the glass. It should give two decades of drinking pleasure. Tasted September 2016.

Domaine Faiveley Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru 2013

WA 93: Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru from Faiveley has a brisk red and black cherry-scented bouquet, hints of violet coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple red berry fruit, well judged acidity, improving all the time in the mouth and gaining cohesion so that the lightly spiced finish has appealing focus and tension. Afford this 1-2 hours in a decanter or preferably give it 8-10 years in the cellar. I like the cut of its jib. Tasted September 2016.

LOUIS ROEDERER GIFT SET IN TIN CARRIER CASE WITH HANDLE

france

Louis Roederer Brut Premier NV

WA 90: Roederer’s NV Brut Premier is a classic and blends about 40% Pinot Noir (from Bouzy and Ambonnay), with 20-25% Meunier (whose share is declining in this blend) and Chardonnay. Two-thirds of the grapes come from estate vineyards, one-third is purchased. (Mind you that all the other Roederer cuvées are sourced exclusively form their own vineyards!) The newest release of the Premier is based on 75% 2009 and 25% reserve wines, which are, since 1996, single vintage wines aged in large oak casks between 6,000 and 10,000 liters. Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon holds 160 vats of reserve wines that are stored blank, so without lees, which otherwise would dominate the taste, says Lécaillon. “I don’t like the reductive yeast flavors. Instead I am searching for a slightly oxidative and oaky style in my reserve wine.” Lécaillon’s youngest Premier did not undergo malolactic fermentation. The wine opens very bright, precise and refined, with toasty and white chocolate flavors. Absolutely delicate and elegant on the palate, this is a light, silky textured and remarkably finesse-full Champagne that is fresh on the palate, thanks to its structure and slightly oaky flavors. Excellent.

Louis Roederer Brut Vintage 2008

WA 93: From a “beautiful vintage” (JB Lécaillon), the 2008 Vintage Brut offers a very precise and refined nose of sweet cherries and lemons. Broad and round on the palate, with orange and lemon flavors, this full-bodied, full-flavored, yet very precise 70/30 Pinot and Chardonnay blend reveals great purity, vitality, finesse and a persistent finish. Sourced from clay soils in Verzy and Verzenay (Pinot), as well as Chouilly, the dry and intense 2008 reveals a remarkable transparency and definition. In fact, this cuvée seems to fly over the palate, but also coats it with an elegant and harmonious fruit. Forty percent of the wine was fermented in oak and 20% underwent malolactic fermentation. This is a very good value.

Louis Roederer Brut Rose 2010

WA 92: The 2010 vintage was not suitable to produce a Cristal or a Vintage, but it was good enough to create the rich and full-bodied 2010 Rosé Vintage; this Champagne blends truly ripe and concentrated Pinot Noir from south-facing, wind-protected plots on clay and chalk soils in Cumières with the freshness, elegance and finesse of Chardonnay from north-facing vineyards in Chouilly (Côte des Blancs). “Since we are looking for round and silky tannins, we need to have ripe fruits,” says Lécaillon. That’s why he produces his Pinot like red wine, which means high density plantings (10,000 to 12,000 mass selection vines per hectare), short pruning, leaf removal already ten days after the flowering, sorting table, cold maceration with 5-10% of the stems and a very reduced extraction. After ten days, the must is racked and blended with the juice of Chardonnay. “The idea is to ‘acidify’ our Pinot Noir, which has a ripe fruit with soft and silky tannin,s but a low acidity,” explains Lécaillon. The resulting blend (65% Pinot and 35% Chardonnay) was partly raised in large oak casks and 20% underwent malolactic fermentation. The 2010 is round, dry and elegant, with a silky texture, and ripe and intense fruit flavors. It has a fine grip and stimulating freshness in the finish. This is an excellent Rosé.

Louis Roederer Carte Blanche Demi Sec NV

WA 90: The NV Extra-Dry Carte Blanche is based on the Brut Premier, but receives a higher dosage of 16 grams per liter. Even though the Carte Blanche naturally shows a bit more sweetness than the Brut Premier it also maintains considerable focus and energy. Here the expression of fruit tends towards brighter, more floral white fruits, green apples/pears. The wine’s balance and length are first rate. This is Lot # L033633C101132. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2015.

PIO CESARE BAROLO 2012 and CESARE FIDES BARBERA D’ALBA 2013

italianflag

Pio Cesare has produced a small miracle with the 2012 Barolo. In a vintage that saw many nondescript wines, this Nebbiolo is bursting with energy and personality. The bouquet opens to an exciting sense of freshness with bright cherry and wild berry at the forefront. You also get balsam herb and mint, with cola and licorice in generous supply at the back. The wine should evolve slowly over the next ten years.

“Fides”, “Faith” in Latin, represents the great long time faith of our Family in the Barbera grapes planted and grown in the area of Barolo.
The grapes are planted in our Family owned Colombaro Vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, one of the most exclusive “Terroirs” of the entire Barolo area, where we could easily obtain a great Barolo instead.

Akashi Whisky

japanese-flag-graphic

One bottle of White Oak Akashi Blended Whisky and one bottle of White Oak Akashi Single Malt at $248

Akashi whisky is the only whisky in the world that is made by a Toji (grand-master in the art of sake making) by implementing sake-making methodologies into the whisky making process. The distil pot used is smaller than those used by both Scottish and other Japanese distilleries, which in turn, decreases the levels of fusel alcohol. As a result, Akashi whisky does not require as long of an ageing process, while its core malt (cask strength) is smooth and delicate.

Akashi White Oak is a blended whisky reserved in Japanese Shochu cask (American Oak) for 3 years, aged in ex-bourbon casks before finishing in ex-sherry casks for 2 years.

Alcohol: 40%
Volume: 500ml

Colour: Orange amber gold
